Nylon and polyester give lingerie its stretch, sheen and shape; cotton gives breathability. Which one matters most depends on how long you plan to wear it.
Lingerie fabric
The essentials
- Nylon (polyamide) is strong, fine and elastic — the backbone of sheer hosiery and most stretch lace.
- Polyester is durable, holds colour and print, resists wrinkling, and costs less — the workhorse of printed and structured pieces.
- Cotton is a natural fibre that breathes and absorbs; it is why gussets are cotton even when nothing else is.
- Almost everything is a blend. The named fibre tells you the character; the elastane content tells you the stretch.
Fabric at a glance
| Breathability | Cotton high · nylon moderate · polyester lower |
| Moisture | Cotton absorbs · nylon and polyester wick and dry fast |
| Stretch | From knit structure and elastane, not the base fibre |
| Care | Hand-wash or a mesh bag on cold, air-dry |
| Allergen | True fibre allergy is rare; reactions are usually to dyes, finishes or trapped moisture |
Good to know — porosity, safety & the honest detail
Which lingerie fabric is best for sensitive skin?
Cotton, or a piece with a cotton gusset, for anything worn for long stretches. Cotton absorbs moisture and lets air through, and trapped warm moisture — not the fibre itself — is behind most irritation people blame on fabric. True nylon or polyester allergy is genuinely rare. Dyes, elastic finishes and a snug fit worn all day are far more often the cause.
Is polyester or nylon better?
They are good at different things. Nylon is finer, stronger for its weight and more elastic, which is why sheer hosiery and stretch lace use it. Polyester takes colour and print better, keeps its shape, resists wrinkles and costs less. For something worn briefly, either is fine and the cut matters more than the fibre. For hours of wear, breathability matters more than either.
Does the fabric affect how long a piece lasts?
Less than how you wash it. Polyester is the most forgiving of laundering. Nylon is strong but the elastane blended with it is what actually fails — heat kills elastic, so a tumble dryer will end a piece long before the nylon wears out. Cotton softens and thins gradually. Cold water, a mesh bag and air-drying roughly doubles the life of anything with stretch in it.
What does the fibre percentage on the label actually tell me?
More than the marketing does. The dominant fibre sets the character — drape, sheen, breathability. The elastane or spandex figure sets the stretch and recovery: around 5–10% is comfortable everyday stretch, higher is shapewear territory. A cotton gusset will often be listed separately, and it is worth looking for in anything you will wear for more than an evening.
Nylon, Polyester & Cotton vs Spandex
| Nylon, Polyester & Cotton | Spandex | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Base fibre (body of the fabric) | Stretch fibre (blended in) |
| Breathability | Cotton high, polyester lower | Low on its own |
| Typical share | 80–95% | 5–20% |
| Fails by | Thinning, pilling | Losing recovery |
| Enemy | Heat, harsh detergent | Heat, softener, chlorine |
How to care for Nylon, Polyester & Cotton
- Hand-wash in cool water with a mild detergent, or use a mesh bag on a cold delicate cycle.
- Skip fabric softener — it coats elastane and destroys stretch recovery.
- Never tumble-dry anything with elastane. Heat is what kills the stretch, not wear.
- Reshape while damp and dry flat or hung away from direct sun.
- Wash new pieces before first wear to remove manufacturing finishes, which are a common cause of first-wear itch.
- Store bras fastened and not folded inside out; fold rather than crush anything structured.
