Travelling with Sex Toys: TSA Rules, Batteries & Borders

Short version: yes, you can take it, nobody at security cares, and the only real risks are a bag that starts buzzing and a bottle of lube that gets confiscated. The longer version is below, because the details differ depending on where you are going.

Airport security

Personal massagers are permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage on US flights. There is no rule against them, they are not on any prohibited list, and screening staff encounter them constantly. If a bag is opened, it is almost always because of something else — a dense battery, a metal object, or a liquid.

What actually draws attention is shape and density on the scanner, not the fact of the item. A large solid toy can look enough like something else to warrant a manual check. That check is brief and unremarkable, and screeners are not permitted to comment on it.

The buzzing bag

This is the genuine risk, and it is entirely avoidable. A toy that switches itself on in a bag will run for as long as the battery lasts, and there is nothing subtle about a suitcase vibrating its way around a carousel.

Rechargeable toys usually have a travel lock. Typically a long press, or a specific button combination. Check yours before you leave rather than in the airport.
Battery toys generally do not. Take the batteries out. This is the single most reliable precaution on this page.
Pack it where it will not be pressed. Buried under packed clothing, a power button gets held down for hours.

Liquids: the rule that actually catches people

Lube is a liquid, and carry-on liquids are capped at 100ml (3.4oz) per container, all of which must fit in a single clear one-litre bag. A full-size bottle in a carry-on gets confiscated — this is far more common than any problem with a toy.

Travel-size bottles solve it outright. Anything at or under 100ml is compliant, and a 1oz or 2oz bottle covers a normal trip comfortably.
The limit is per container, not per volume. Three 100ml bottles are fine; one 150ml bottle is not, even if it is half empty.
Checked bags have no such limit. If you are checking a bag anyway, put the full-size bottle in it — inside a sealed bag, because pressure changes push liquid past a cap.

Batteries and charging

Lithium batteries must fly in the cabin. Airlines require rechargeable toys with built-in lithium cells to travel in carry-on, not checked baggage. This is a fire rule and it is enforced.
USB charging is 5V everywhere. You need a plug adapter for the socket shape, not a voltage converter. Bring the cable — proprietary magnetic chargers are impossible to replace abroad.
Rechargeable beats battery for travel. Hunting for AAs in an unfamiliar town on a Sunday is a poor use of a holiday.

Hotels, noise and cleaning

Hotel walls are thinner than the ones at home, and rooms are quieter at night than you expect. Smaller motors are generally quieter, which is a large part of why the bullet format wins for travel — it is not only about the space in the bag.

For cleaning, warm water and mild soap works for silicone, glass and steel. A travel-size toy cleaner is easier than negotiating a hotel bathroom, and if the toy is porous — PVC, TPE, TPR, jelly — cleaning matters more, because those materials cannot be fully sterilised. Crossing borders

This is the one place where the honest answer is “check first”. Adult products are legal throughout the US, the UK, the EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and are unremarkable at those borders.

They are restricted or prohibited in a number of countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, India and the Maldives. Penalties range from confiscation to considerably worse, and transiting through an airport can be enough to count. If you are travelling to or through any of these, leave it at home — this is not a risk worth taking for a week away.
