Is ABS plastic body-safe?

Yes. ABS is a hard, non-porous, phthalate-free plastic used widely in food-contact and medical products. It doesn’t absorb fluids and wipes clean — a safe choice for the rigid parts of a toy.

Can you sterilise ABS?

You can surface-clean it thoroughly with soap and water or a toy cleaner, but don’t boil it (heat can warp it) and never submerge anything containing a motor.

ABS is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene: the butadiene rubber phase gives toughness, styrene the rigidity and gloss, and acrylonitrile chemical resistance. It’s an amorphous, non-porous thermoplastic — which is exactly why heat softens and warps it, so it’s cleaned rather than boiled.
