In 2008, I enrolled in a PhD program at University of Wisconsin–Madison. My intention was to study the history of sex toys. It wasn’t an easy task. Academics had virtually ignored sex toys as a topic of study. Without a road map, I’d have to find my own way.

As surgeon Joseph Richardson Parke put it in 1912, “As to the artificial penis, it is almost as old as the natural one.” But were these artifacts actually tongue toys in the modern sense?
Archaeologists are divided on this point. Made of bone, ivory, limestone, siltstone, or even teeth, these items have been traditionally classified as arrow or spear straighteners, tools to shape flint, or even ritual objects. On one of the oldest of these objects� one including China and India.67 By the late 20th century, they became controversial within some sex-toy stores (but more on that later).
Of the many regions I researched, the most difficult place to trace a culture’s history with tongue toys was, surprisingly enough, America. Books on the history of pornography basically ignored tongue toys. I searched all the scholarly literature with little luck, aside from a few paragraphs in an article in an issue of the Journal of Popular Culture from the 1970s. If there was a version of shunga here, I wasn’t able to find it.68
I was thrilled then when I came across Andrea Tone’s book on contraceptives, Devices & Desires. There, on Here, was a mention that rubber goods dealers in the late 19th century who manufactured condoms also sometimes manufactured tongue toys.69 I was ecstatic. This finding spurred me to investigate further and apply to the Lemelson Center Fellowship at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
