Implements differ mainly in whether they land thuddy or stingy. A heavy leather flogger or a broad padded paddle spreads force over a wide area and feels deep and dull; a crop, cane or thin slapper concentrates it and stings sharply. Thuddy is the easier place to begin, and it is also considerably quieter, which matters more than most people expect in a home with neighbours.

Wherever you start: warm up gradually before anything hard, stay on fleshy areas — buttocks and upper thighs — and keep well away from the kidneys, spine, joints and tailbone.
