Editorial Standards & How We Research

Last reviewed: July 2, 2026

Our whole approach comes down to one promise: we’ll never decide for you, and we’ll always tell you the truth. Here’s exactly what that means, how we research what we publish, and where we draw our lines.

“We’ll never decide for you. We’ll always tell you the truth.”

Why we carry the full range

We could stock only premium platinum silicone and refuse everything else. Plenty of good shops do, and we respect it. We made a different choice. We carry the full range — from a $9 novelty to a body-safe heirloom — because the person shopping for the inexpensive toy is going to buy it somewhere. The only question is whether they buy it from a store that tells them the honest truth about the material, or one that says nothing at all.

So we’d rather trust you and arm you. Every product page explains what the material actually is — including, plainly, when something is porous, best used with a condom, or a budget pick you might one day want to upgrade from. We think that’s more respectful than deciding on your behalf, and more honest than hiding the trade-offs.

What “body-safe” means to us

We use the phrase carefully. A product earns the body-safe label only when it’s made from a non-porous material — silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel, ABS, or ceramic — that doesn’t absorb fluids and can be cleaned thoroughly. That label never appears on a porous product. It’s a firewall, not a marketing word: if you filter for body-safe or shop our body-safe collection, you can trust that every item genuinely qualifies. We don’t use vague “medical-grade” or “non-toxic” claims, and we’re equally clear about the porous materials we carry — we label and explain them rather than pretend they’re something they’re not.

How we research what we publish

  • Open, citable sources. Our material and ingredient explainers are written in-house from public references — Wikipedia (CC BY-SA), PubChem (public domain), and published regulatory status. We cite them on every page so you can check our work — see how we cite →
  • Facts, not borrowed phrasing. We take the facts and write them in our own words for a real shopper — beginner first, with the deeper chemistry available for anyone who wants it.
  • We describe, we don’t prescribe. We tell you what a material or ingredient is and how to care for it. We don’t tell you it’s “safe” or “unsafe” as a verdict — that depends on you, and often on your doctor.
  • Grounded in the catalog. The products we surface in a guide are chosen by real availability and genuine best-seller signal, not paid placement.

Where we draw the line

Some questions we deliberately won’t answer with a simple yes or no, because an honest answer is more useful than a confident one:

  • This is education, not medical advice. If you have a specific allergy, condition, or concern, check the product label and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
  • When the science is contested, we show both sides. For debated ingredients we tell you what regulators currently permit, what it does, and that some people prefer to avoid it — and we date it, because these things change.
  • Device-specific properties belong to the label. Things like a lubricant’s pH, osmolality, or condom compatibility are product-specific — we point you to the manufacturer’s information rather than guess.

Accuracy & corrections

We date every guide and update it when the facts change. If you spot something that looks wrong, we genuinely want to know — tell us here and we’ll review it.

Who writes this

Our guides are written and maintained by the Phareros Editorial Team — the in-house team that runs the shop, reads the sources, and answers your questions every day. We’re not doctors, and we’ll always tell you when a question is one for a professional. What we can promise is that we’ll be straight with you.
