Lace: Is It Itchy? How to Wash Lace Lingerie

Lace is a delicate, decorative openwork fabric — the signature of lingerie, made in nylon, cotton or blends.

Lingerie fabric

The essentials

  • An openwork fabric defined by its pattern, not one single fibre.
  • Feels light and textured; softness varies by fibre and weave.
  • Hand-wash gentle in a mesh bag; lay flat to dry.
  • Used for overlays, trims and statement pieces.

Is lace itchy?

It depends on the fibre. Soft stretch laces and cotton-blend laces feel gentle, while stiffer rigid nylon lace can feel scratchy on sensitive skin. Check the composition, and a lined or cotton-gusseted piece helps.

How do you wash lace lingerie?

Hand-wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or use a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cycle. Don’t wring or tumble-dry — reshape and lay it flat to dry.

Is lace hypoallergenic?

Lace isn’t a single material, so sensitivity depends on the fibre (nylon, cotton, elastane) and any dyes. If you’re sensitive, look for OEKO-TEX-certified or cotton-rich lace and check the fabric details.

How to care for Lace

  1. Hand-wash gentle or use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle.
  2. Don’t wring; reshape and lay flat to dry.
  3. Store flat or hung so it doesn’t snag.
For the material nerds ↓
Lace is defined by its construction — threads looped, twisted or knotted into a pattern with open areas — rather than by a fibre. Historically it was needle or bobbin lace; most modern lace is machine-made (Leavers or raschel). The fibre it’s made from (cotton, nylon, elastane) determines how it feels, stretches and should be washed.
